Montauk
Montauk is where the Hamptons run out of hedges and remember the sea. The End, as the bumper stickers rightly call it, trades topiary for bluffs and galas for surfboards, and closes the island with a lighthouse commissioned by George Washington in 1796\. It is the East End at its most elemental — and from our residences to the west, the finest day trip the Hamptons own.

The Hamlet
Everything out here answers to the ocean. Ditch Plains sets the surf schedule, the harbor sets the dinner menu, and the trails through Shadmoor's bluffs and Camp Hero's woods set the afternoons. The town wears its fishing-village bones proudly — chowder shacks beside new-wave hotels, dive bars beside natural-wine rooms — and the light, famously, is different: bigger, saltier, more honest. Summer packs the motels and the lineups; the shoulder seasons return Montauk to the surfers, the stripers and the people who drove out just to watch the Atlantic think. Come for the day, stay for the sunset at the lighthouse, and be home — pleasantly windblown — by ten.
Just along the road — East Hampton. Or see every neighborhood we keep in The Hamptons.
Getting Around
Good To Know
The lobster roll rule: the famous one is worth one visit; the harbor shacks the locals use are worth all the rest. And the lighthouse is best an hour before sunset, when the crowds thin, the bluffs go gold, and the ocean puts on its full evening performance.

Questions, Answered
Not yet — Montauk is served as the great day trip from our East End homes, thirty-five minutes west. Tell us the day and we'll pack the beach kit and book the harbor table.
Officially yes, temperamentally no — and Montauk is proud of the difference. Surf first, scene second.
June for the light, September for the surf and the striped bass, and any month at all for the lighthouse an hour before sunset.
