The days here keep a gentleman's schedule: the esplanade takes the morning run, Grand Central takes the commute (wherever it points), and Midtown's great tables take the evenings, a short stroll west. It is central without being frantic, prestigious without being cold, and quiet without being sleepy — the diplomats, as usual, negotiated the best deal on the island.

Getting aroundThis is the best-connected quiet neighborhood in Manhattan. The 6 at 51st Street is your local; Grand Central's 4/5/6/7 and shuttle put the whole island — and, via Metro-North, half the Northeast — on your doorstep; the E and M at 53rd & Lexington run crosstown and out toward the airports. Taxis are plentiful, the avenues behave logically, and the walk to almost anything in Midtown is shorter than the cab line.

The esplanade south of 51st does the city's most underrated sunrise, and Tudor City's pocket parks were built for the lunch hour. One insider warning: during General Assembly week — the UN's own high season — walk everywhere. You'll beat every motorcade, and feel rather smug doing it.
